Time Inc., who earlier this year announced it was brining in McKinsey to help ‘re-engineer’ the business, has controversially named a McKinsey partner, Christian Schmitz, as the man it will bring in to get to work on the transformation. Rather than hire – as it was planning to do – a chief transformation officer internally (others had already put their names in the hat included Jaison Blair, the media firm’s head of investor relations), the McKinsey man will oversee his own staffers devoted to the project. According to reports, Time Inc. needs to cut $400 million in costs between now and the end of next year, and McKinsey will be paid a percentage of the savings they manage to create.
