Sainsbury’s, the UK’s second-largest supermarket chain which has been steadily losing ground to cheaper, discounter chains including Lidl and Aldi, has reportedly called in McKinsey as part of an ongoing plan to save the business £500 million by 2018. The move follows news in March that the grocer was shedding 400 in-store jobs, while 4,000 staff would have their hours changed – including scrapping night-shifts. According to a report in The Guardian, McKinsey has been tasked to draw up a ‘headcount reduction plan’ up to 1 000 jobs within the headquarter and corporate functions.
