McKinsey has announced that it has successfully developed a way of benchmarking and evaluating the efficiency and effectiveness of government spending. The McKinsey Center for Government’s Government Productivity Scope identifies public sector productivity opportunities across healthcare, education, public safety, transportation and taxation and its main mission is to measure the returns on government investment and drive potential changes that could generate $3.5 trillion in annual savings by 2021. In developing the methodology it applied the tool across 42 countries that together make up 80 percent of global GDP. In every sector measured McKinsey found examples where governments have reduced expenditure per unit but have still experienced improved outcomes.
